Our Story

Cambrensis is a direct reflection of founder and Creative Director Ioan Bowen-Pickett’s upbringing in South Wales and his lifelong relationship with fashion, Welsh culture and the communities that shaped him. Born in Cardiff and raised with family roots in Merthyr Tydfil and Ebbw Vale, Ioan grew up surrounded by the stories, language, art and working-class values of the South Wales Valleys. His early fascination with the timeless garments worn by generations of Welsh football supporters became an important influence on his approach to design: looking to the past to inform the future.

The foundations of Cambrensis were established shortly before Ioan’s twentieth birthday, when he began searching for a name and icon that could represent a distinctly Welsh fashion label. After months of development, inspiration came from an unexpected place: the miners’ safety lamps he discovered while researching Welsh industrial history at Cardiff Library. The lamp became the defining Cambrensis icon, while the name was suggested by Ioan’s mother, a Welsh teacher and Welsh history enthusiast. Meaning ‘Of Wales’ in Latin and derived from Gerald Cambrensis, the name captured the sense of identity and place that had been central to the brand from the beginning.

Built from the ground up through creativity, experimentation and the resilience of South Wales, Cambrensis has grown into an independent Welsh fashion house with a community at its heart. Every collection is designed in South Wales, drawing on the people, places, history and visual language that have shaped Ioan’s creative perspective. The ambition remains the same as it was on day one: to build a proudly independent Welsh fashion house and use fashion to communicate the story of modern Wales to audiences around the world.
